Shufai has faced more challenges in his life than most. As a baby, he was injured by a gunshot when his mother was killed by hunters and endured months of rehabilitation. Two years later, he contracted meningitis which left him temporarily paralysed. Four years after that he developed serious complications from his gunshot wounds and had to have his left arm amputated above the elbow. He has borne all of this with amazing bravery and strength and is beloved by his gorilla companions and our team alike.
