A thriving sanctuary for gorillas, thanks to the generous support of Mr Eran Moas
At Ape Action Africa, our environment is constantly evolving — shaped not only by the rhythm of the seasons but also by the steady progress of projects that transform the daily lives of the primates in our care.
One of the most meaningful milestones was the completion of the Chickaboo Enclosure in 2023, a project made possible through the generous support of our Honorary President, Mr. Eran Moas.
Spanning 2.78 hectares of protected forest, the enclosure first became home to a family of seven gorillas, three females and four males, all of whom had been rescued after losing their families or being displaced.
In this forested haven, they are free to explore, interact, and grow stronger in a setting that nurtures both their physical and emotional wellbeing. The forest itself plays a vital role in their recovery, offering the natural space and stimulation they need to truly thrive.
To complement the outdoor habitat, four spacious sleeping chambers were built nearby. These night houses provide a calm, secure retreat at the end of each day, while also allowing our care team to closely monitor the gorillas health in an environment that prioritizes both comfort and safety.
Since its completion, the Chickaboo Enclosure has welcomed two more young orphans, Nouji and Barbie, who are now flourishing in their new family group.
Thanks to the devoted care of adult females Chickaboo and Luci, who have taken on the role of surrogate mothers, both infants are growing up surrounded by protection, guidance, and love.
The Chickaboo Enclosure, and the gorillas who call it home, stand as a shining example of our mission:
to provide lifelong sanctuary for gorillas who cannot be released, ensuring each individual lives with dignity in an environment that respects their needs.
This success would not have been possible without the steadfast support of Mr. Moas, whose role as Honorary President is defined by meaningful, practical impact. We are deeply grateful for his continued dedication.
We look forward to witnessing Nouji and Barbie’s journey as they grow into their forest home and to sharing more glimpses of daily life within this flourishing sanctuary.
